Stay Safe in Breakdown Situations:
Breaking down on a journey is always annoying and disruptive, but it can also be frightening, particularly on long journeys in an unfamiliar area.
Look out for breakdown early warning signs and take action. If you notice strange noises, unusual vibrations, smoke or anything else that makes you feel uncomfortable, slow down and find a safe place to park.
Warn Oncoming Vehicles
Switch on hazard lights. In miserable weather it’s a good idea to switch on your side lights too to give other road users the best chance to see your vehicle.
To The Left
Pull over to a safe place. If you’re on the motorway and can’t make it to an exit or services you’ll need to pull on to the hard shoulder. Park as far to the left as possible and point your wheels left to avoid the car rolling into traffic.
Exit If Safe
If you have reflective clothing, put it on. You and your passengers should exit the vehicle, so long as it is safe to do so, through the left side (passenger side) doors. If you’re travelling with pets it’s usually safer to leave them in the car, making sure the windows are cracked and water is provided.
